Shipping Goods Internationally

By: Gordon MacKinnon

If you are a small business looking to expand globally, one of the important things you should know about is how to ship goods internationally. Whether you sell on an ecommerce site or an auction site, there are times that people may want to purchase your product and ship it overseas. Understanding how to ship goods internationally is an important step in making your business internationally viable.

One of the things you should check out is which countries are easy to ship to. For instance, shipping to Europe, Australia and Canada are usually very easy and orderly to ship to. If you are planning on shipping to developing countries you might find lots of bureaucracy and difficulty with customs making shipping items that are time sensitive virtually impossible.

Duties and customs are another issue that must be faced. It is one thing to ship one item. However if you plan on shipping wholesale items that are expensive, you may have to pay customs, tariffs, etc. You might want to hire a broker to make sure that your goods are shipped smoothly and received by the other party. For small business, there are plenty of resources on the web and major shipping companies such as Fed Ex, UPS and the USPS have shipping resources available online that can also be of use.
